This article presents the Cambridge Business English listening case about Rau Pack’s development and future strategy. It highlights the company’s growth journey, expansion into various industries, and its vision for future technical development, while also helping learners improve authentic English expressions in real-life business contexts.

Learning English is not only about mastering grammar and vocabulary, but more importantly about using it naturally in real-life situations. However, the sentences in textbooks are often too formal and quite different from real-life expressions. To speak authentic and natural English, one needs exposure to real-life dialogues. Here, we have selected frequently used English expressions that cover social, work, and travel contexts, helping you get rid of 'textbook English' and learn how native speakers actually talk. Below is the content from this issue of 'New Cambridge Business English (Elementary) Unit 16b'. Keep practicing, and make your English closer to real life!

Could you tell me about Rau pack and its activities? We're an agent for German manufacturers of packing machinery. We provide them with a British sales network and translate their documents. Specifications and parts list into English. I see. We also deal with the British customers and all their inquiries and correspondence. And we arrange customers visits to Germany. That's very interesting.

How did this company begin? Before I started Rau pack, I worked in sales for eight years for an international company here in the UK. We had to use some small suppliers of packing machinery to complete our product range. But working with both large and small suppliers caused problems. The smaller companies wanted someone to sell only their products. So in 1982, I left and set up my own company, Rau pack limited. Wow, it was a big step.

And how has this company developed since then? Well, I began selling to the drinks industry. Our suppliers began developing excellent new machines that were technically more advanced than our competitors. These machines helped us to expand into the food and pharmaceutical industries. And our salespeople were very good at understanding and selling these new machines. So Rau pack got a name for delivering excellent products and providing a service that was fair to both customers and suppliers.

Very good. Since then, turnover has grown to nearly ten million pounds a year. And our customers now include companies such as Smith Klein, Beechham, Boots and Glacso. Excellent. We moved into these new offices last year. And at the moment, we're looking for new staff to help the company grow further. Very good.

And the future, how do you see the future? I think technical development is the key to the industry. Companies have to produce and pack more and more specialized goods to satisfy their customers. So in future, our suppliers will have to develop their machines technically but without losing any reliability. Our job, of course, is going to be to sell these new machines and continue to provide the best possible support for both our customers and our suppliers.
