Below is the content of 'Real Life English Unit 23: Moving In'. Consistent practice will make your English sound more natural and closer to real life! Unit 23: Moving In Part One: Expressions 1. There’s some more out at my parents’. 2. Well, do you want to go get some dinner? 3. You should save some money on parking here. 4. It’s a pain to find parking on the street. 5. Most of the street parking is gone by then. 6. I can live with it. 7. Wow, you keep this place cold. 8. It’s a small price to pay to be comfortable. 9. It is nice to come in here after a run. 10. I could never get used to it, though. Part Two: Dialogues 1. Utilities & Furniture A: This is a nice place, but you need to get some furniture. B: I have some I can bring from our place, and there’s some more out at my parents’. A: Do you have a bed? B: Yeah. I have one from college at my parents’ house. A: Can I take a shower? B: Sure, but I don’t have hot water, yet. A: Really? B: No, they’re coming tomorrow morning to turn the gas on. My phone should be working then, too. A: Well, do you want to go get some dinner? B: Yeah, I can’t cook anything until tomorrow, anyway. 2. Garages & Parking A: You should save some money on parking here. B: Yeah, I don’t have to pay for a space on the street. A: Really? How long did it take you to find a spot yesterday? B: Well, last night it took me half an hour to find a spot when I came home from work. A: You get home late, don’t you? B: Yeah, around seven. Most of the street parking is gone by then. A: Ah, well. You can’t have everything. B: Yeah. I can live with it. It’s great to be living alone. 3. Heating & Air-Conditioning A: Wow, you keep this place cold. B: Yep. It’s cold in the summer, hot in the winter. A: Your electricity bills must be enormous. B: Yeah, well, it’s a small price to pay to be comfortable, in my mind. A: It is nice to come in here after a run. B: Yeah. The central heating and air-conditioning works like a charm. A: I usually don’t use it unless it gets really hot. I just open up some windows, and I’m fine. B: My friend’s family did the same thing. I could never get used to it, though. Part Three: Substitution Drills 1. A: There’s some more out at my (parents’/ parents’ house/ my family’s home). B: That’s good. 2. A: Well, do you want to go get some (breakfast/ lunch/ dinner/ a snack)? B: Sure. 3. A: You should save (some/ a lot/ a little bit of) money on parking here. B: Yeah. 4. A: It’s a pain (to find parking/ to park/ to find a place to park) on the street. B: Is it? 5. A: (Most/ almost all/ a great deal) of the street parking is gone by then. B: Really? 6. A: I can (live with it/ stand it/ bear it/ endure it.) B: It’s not the end of the world. 7. A: Wow, you keep this place (cold/ cool/ freezing). B: Yeah, I like it that way. 8. A: (It’s a small price to pay/ I’m willing to do it) to be comfortable. B: I see. 9. A: It is nice to (come in here/ take a shower/ stretch) after a run. B: Yeah, I know what you mean. 10. A: I could never (get used to/ grow accustomed to) it, though. B: It’s not too bad. Part Four: Monologue Heating and air conditioning in the states is usually done by what is called central heating and air-conditioning. A heating unit in the basement of a house burns gas to heat air or water, which is then forced through the house or building to raise its temperature. An air-conditioning unit outside the house or building runs on electricity to cool the air and then sends it into the building through openings in the rooms of the buildings. People have to pay, of course, for the electricity they use and the gas they burn to keep their homes at just the right temperature. Part Five: Vocabulary and Phrases --parking: Parking, parking spots --furniture: Furniture --shower: Shower, shower head --gas: Gas, natural gas --electricity: Electricity, electrical power --central heating: Central heating system --air conditioning: Air conditioning --It’s a small price to pay: This small amount of money is worth it.
