Unit 25 of Real Life English covers everyday shopping expressions and dialogues, helping learners master authentic English usage in real-life contexts, moving away from textbook-style English and learning how to communicate while shopping.
Learning English is not just about mastering grammar and vocabulary; it's more important to be able to use it naturally in real-life situations. However, the sentences in textbooks are often too formal and differ greatly from actual expressions used in daily life. To speak natural, authentic English, it is crucial to expose oneself to dialogues in real contexts. In this article, we have selected frequently used English expressions in daily life, covering scenarios like socializing, work, and travel, helping you move beyond textbook English and learn the expressions actually used by native speakers. Below is the content of Unit 25: Household Goods Shopping. Keep practicing and let your English become more practical in real life!

Part Two: Dialogues
1. Shopping
A: That dress is too expensive.
B: But it’s so pretty.
A: Yes, it is pretty, but it costs $200. What about this one? It’s almost the same, but it costs half as much.
B: It’s not the same. It’s completely different.
A: It’s just a little shorter.
B: I really like this one.
A: Well, it’s your money. You can spend it however you want.
B: Yeah. It’s pretty.
2. Making a List
A: Let’s try to get out of the supermarket quickly.
B: Yeah. I hate spending all day in there, too.
A: What do we need? Let’s make a list.
B: We need milk, eggs, butter, coffee, vegetables, fruit, bread, cheese, and some snacks.
A: I want some pickles, oh, and we’re out of flour. Put that on the list too.
B: Anything else?
A: Not that I can think of. Wait a second, we’re out of breakfast cereal. I think corn flakes are on sale. Get those.
B: No, you get those. I’ll go and get the fruits, vegetables, milk, butter, and eggs, you get the rest.
3. Sales
A: There’s a big sale on clothes and sporting goods at Riverside Mall.
B: Sporting goods? Is that bike Tim wanted on sale?
A: Yeah, it’s 30 percent off the regular price.
B: Well, maybe we could get it now and hide it until his birthday.
A: Yeah, it’s a couple weeks away, and we don’t have anything yet.
B: Don’t buy him underwear again. He hates that.
A: I know, I know, but if I didn’t buy it for him, he’d never buy it.
B: See anything else we need there?
A: Well, all shoes are 20 percent off.

Part Four: Monologue
Bargaining is not common in the United States, but sales are. Stores offer discounts on their merchandise during sales. They hope to bring in more customers and clear out merchandise that hasn’t sold by offering discounts. People watch for sales carefully to save money on things they need. Every store will offer a discount on its merchandise at some point, so it’s just a matter of waiting until the item you want goes on sale. The Going-Out-of-Business Sale is, perhaps, the sale where one can get the biggest discounts. When stores are closing for good, they try to get any price for their merchandise. This means you can often get discounts of up to 90%.
Part Five: Vocabulary and Phrases
--expensive: high-priced; costly
--on sale: on discount, auctioned
--percent: percentage
--cheap: inexpensive, low-priced
--spend: to spend money
--money: currency
--cost: the expense
--clothes: garments
--underwear: undergarments
That’s all for this unit from Seven Net. We hope it helps you improve your real-life English skills for shopping!
