On what basis is Japan claiming sovereignty over the Dow use? This textbook is studied in many Japanese universities. It refers to the Dow use as the Sankaku Islands. The text says... Disputed claims to Sankaku Islands arose in 1970, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry. Since 1885, the Japanese have made repeated fact-finding trips around Okinawa and finding no evidence of Qing dynasty presence acknowledge the islands to be Telenalius. In January 1895, the Japanese cabinet formally claimed the islands as part of Japan and set up defense facilities there. Some Japanese like Kyoto University Professor Inui Keio do not support Japan's claims. He came to that conclusion after studying archival records from the Ming and Qing dynasty. So before Japan claimed the Dow use in January 1895, were these islands Telenalius? Okinawa used to be called Liu Chiu in Chinese. It was an independent kingdom. In the 14th century, it paid tribute to the emperor of China. In the Ming and Qing dynasty, China also sent missions to Liu Chiu. It was an archipelago of 36 islands. It did not include the Dow use. The Dow use are mentioned in diplomatic records circa 1534. At the time, the Ming court had sent its envoy Changkan to Liu Chiu. On the 10th, southern winds were blowing our ships swiftly along the currents, sailing past Pingjian, Da Yu, Hang Mao and Chi Islands. We passed many islands. On the 11th night, we passed Gu Mi Shan to belong to Liu Chiu. In other words, Gu Mi Shan was the border of Liu Chiu and the Dow use which Changkan sailed past were part of China. Similar records were found in the diary of another Ming dynasty diplomat, Guorui Lin. General Wu Jiu Xian of the Ming dynasty, who had fought Japanese pirates, compiled a maritime map in 1661, which included the Dow use inside Chinese territorial waters. The northern waters of the Dow use are shallow in the south, they're deep, especially in their Chi way island, the waters vary in depth and the dark current is seen. Perhaps a dark trench. Qing dynasty's Zhou Wang, in a guide to the Liu Chiu kingdom, mentions this trench as a boundary between China and the outside world. Clearly, records from the Ming and Qing dynasty show the boundary dividing China and Liu Chiu state lies between the Chi way islands and Kuma Shima. The records show the Dow use were part of the Chi way islands and thus a part of China, even 300 years before Japan claimed the island and not Teranalius. Professor Inou Wei wrote of the Japanese occupation of the Dow use. The Dow use were not ceded to Japan under any treaty, but was stolen from China in the confusion following Japanese victory over the Qing dynasty. The Dow use was not ceded to Japan under any treaty, but was stolen from China in the same way as the Dow use.
