I said No one is more cold-blooded in front of the goal than Ian Wright. He is a natural born one-man strike force. He has scored over 130 goals since he joined Arsenal four years ago, making him one of the most consistent strikers in the Premier League. Ian is 5'9 and a light bit. He is often marked by taller and heavier players who can push him off the ball. What gives him the edge over them? It's got to be his will to win and a nifty challenge. Then it's a challenge to win if it's obvious you want to win the game. But like if you just want to defend a ball, anything like that to come out on top. His lean torso muscles play an important part, balancing him as he puts all his weight on one leg, leaving the other free to kick the ball. These muscles keep him balanced as his leg follows through like a pendulum after impact.
His long follow-through either pulls him forward or twists his whole body at the hips. Just start the kick. His butt and hip muscles pull his leg back like a trigger. Then his hip flexors drive his upper leg forwards. This is the powerhouse of the kick. The hamstring muscles at the back of his thigh control his lower leg, allowing it to swing down at a precise moment to impact.
The timing of this lower leg release is the secret to his power. He locks his ankle joint to transfer as much energy to the ball as possible. The force of impact twists his foot back in the ankle socket. In a fraction of a second, the ball is accelerated to 70 miles an hour or more.
Right finishing skills can exploit all kinds of scoring chances. The diving header is the best option for a low fast cross in front of him. The action looks simple: run, dive, hit the ball. But there is more to it than that. His angle of approach will set the ball's path to the target. And to give it pace he must time his launch to meet the ball at top speed.
For an upright header, he tenses his neck and shoulder muscles. They brace his head for impact and deliver maximum body momentum to the ball. The effort is clear to see. Whatever the opportunity, he and right will have a way to try and score. But he can't do it alone.
